Let's go to the videotape...What no tape anymore?!?

Alright, so my last venture into blogging in a short and sweet manner did not pan out as well as I thought. Guess I am just wordy! Have I lost you yet?!?

Anyway, I have written up some plans for a video lesson in gymnastics with a recurring fictional organization needing instructional dance videos for various line dances. In small groups, the students would practice the dances, film the cues and steps, and edit it down to create a 90 second product. Thoughts?

The biggest problem I keep running into is the same problem - time!!! I have turned the idea into a potentially four week lesson and still feel like I barely have enough time. I have considered visiting students in their class room to create more time with the software tools and planning processes; and my fellow colleagues do a great job of making time available for me to try some of these ideas out but I always feel as if I am putting part of their curriculum on hold. Am I asking too much of my students? My colleagues? Or even my field?

Feel free to gossip amongst yourselves. Go!

  1. Ah... yes time!! Time is an issue. During my first unit, I had to use a lot of my planning time to get my unit projects done. The teacher was very willing to give up his time as he saw the importance of integrating the use of technology within the curriculum. I don't know how many times I thanked the teacher for letting me have that extra time. His comment was: "It is good for the students. They enjoyed working on the products and working together in groups." I think that when we learn how to integrate technolgy into the curriculum and start students off at a young age of using technology time will no longer be an issue. For example, our units, I sure did learn a lot about my lessons and how to modify them for the next unit. It takes practice, practice, practice and then time will no longer be such a big issue.

  2. I too am having a problem with time, not enough to get the planned units done, and I am also constantly thanking the main classroom teacher for the use of their class. Sherri thinks it will get better over time with more practice, I think that's right but I also think each year will be different with a new set of incoming students.

  3. It will be good to remember in the future the favors those teachers are doing for you! :) I think it is great that you can work well with the other subject teachers!
I agree with the others, we are making some serious alterations on time, sacrificing some topics to cover our units. I am trying not to overworry about it. I don't think the kids will be affected adversly in the long run. I look back at my first year teaching and wonder if those kids learned anything!
